The Ultrasonic Testing Level 1 course includes a basic introduction to the theory and principles of ultrasound including frequency, velocity and wavelength. It addresses the variables related to the propagation, reflection and attenuation of sound, as well as the responses from discontinuities. The various wave modes are presented in a comprehensive way so that the major wave modes include compressional (longitudinal or straight beam), shear (transverse), surface (Rayleigh) and thin sheet (Lamb).
The student taking this course will be able to understand the display and calibrate the UT instrument and identify the location of reflectors and discontinuities in various test specimens. There are demonstrations showing how to use UT equipment and transducers as well as, precise thickness measurements and basic procedures in UT Testing. A number of techniques and applications will also be presented including discussions on the data required for precise reporting.
This course is essential for those desiring to enter and specialize in UT. It is also beneficial for those who will not be practitioners but who want to understand the basic principles and applications of Ultrasonic Testing.

Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT)
The Ultrasonic Thickness Testing course describes the basic principles of ultrasound as they apply to thickness testing of materials and components. It concentrates on the compressional wave mode (sometimes referred to as longitudinal or straight beam) and provides a straight forward way to apply this technique for precise thickness measurements. The various transducers used and their advantages are presented and demonstrated including straight beam, delay line and dual element (pitch-catch). Variables such as surface conditions, coatings, configurations, couplant and material grain structures are all addressed and a wide range of applications are included. This lesson also demonstrates how to calibrate UT Thickness instruments including Digital and A-Scan, take actual measurements and collect / document results.
This course is ideal for those individuals who will be taking thickness measurements with UT instruments and / or are pursuing Limited Level II UT Thickness Certification. It is also applicable for those who will be providing oversight on UT Thickness operations.
Ultrasonic Testing Level II is an extension of UT Level I and delves into the theories and principles to a much greater depth. After a review of the basic Level I subjects, variables such as beam profile, dead, near and far zones, acoustic impedance, absorption and scattering as presented. Other subjects essential for performing angle beam inspection of welds include mode conversion, refraction and attenuation are covered. Calibration of the UT instruments are demonstrated as well as the examination of several test specimens. Immersion and through transmission are discussed along with a variety of other techniques. The evaluation and interpretation of test results, along with the need for complete and accurate test reporting are presented as well.
This is an essential course for those practitioners who will be pursing a career in Ultrasonic Testing and for those striving for certification as a Level II.
